Ski season is upon us!

Opening day at  Park City Mountain Resort is a week away, 11.19.11- Are you ready for ski season?

Are you in ski shape? Have you checked your equipment and clothing to ensure it's working properly and still fits?

If you answered yes then you are ready to have fun!
If you answered no, you still have time but you need to get on it!  There's nothing more deflating than getting to the mountain to only find out that your clothing doesn't fit or your equipment isn't working properly.

Park City- October Storm Drops 10 Inches

Well it's the day after the 1st snowfall of the season. Everyone I've talked to is excited about the prospect of another La Nina ski season like last year! Take a look at the article and pics from PCMR.

1st snowfall of the season in Park City!

Well it has happened! The first snowfall of the season has hit Park City and has everyone excited and giddy. The Park City Mountain Resort web cams let you see all the action live and streaming! PCMR's "Guess the 1st snowfall over 6" may be in jeopardy as this is being typed. :)

A few quotes from some of my PC FB and Twitter friends summing it all up:

" I feel like a kid seeing it snow for the 1st time" - Jo Gabrielson
"I think some of us adults are just as excited as the kids"- Ski Utah Powderhound Cat
"Snowflakes and smiles! The kids are asking when we can ski"- Elissa Aten

Think snow!

My Top 10 Reasons To Ski/Snowboard in Park City, Utah for the 2011/2012 season

These is my personal list and is in no certain order.

1. Utah gets on average 500 inches of THE GREATEST SNOW ON EARTH annually. They call it the Great Salt Lake Effect when lake water rises into the clouds, producing squalls of light, fluffy and dry snow that dumps on the nearby Wasatch Mountains. This Utah trademarked snow phenomenon causes an epidemic called “powder flu” - highly contagious amongst skiers – causing extended work absences and irrepressible grins.

2. There are 3 World Class Resorts all within a 30-40 minute drive of SLC International airport..Park City Mountain Resort, Deer Valley and The Canyons ... Park City Mountain Resort ( http://www.pcmr.com/) is our FAVE

3. By arriving on an early flight and leaving on a late flight you can actually get 2 extra days on the slopes

4. Ability to ski/board a different resort every day if you choose

5. Après ski- The only thing DRY in Utah is the SNOW. There are over 100 bars and restaurants in Park City alone.

6. Your first ski day in Park City, Utah is FREE on your day of arrival. Thanks to the Quick Start promotion from the Park City Chamber of Commerce, you can ski on your arrival day free of charge (applicable dates vary) simply by showing your QuickStart voucher and your boarding pass.

7. Park City is the best western ski town because you get three ski resorts all within minutes of each other. This 1868 silver mining town is now a gold mine for skiers. The funky frontier Main Street brims with western saloons, just enough boutiques for après ski retail therapy, and an artsy vibe. Robert Redford’s Sundance Film Festival (2nd only to Cannes Film Fest) is staged in Park City every January.

8.  My #1 is PCMR. Park City Mountain Resort( http://www.pcmr.com/) is where the US Ski & Snowboard Teams train. You can push your limits here too amid 9 bowls and 3,300-acres. McConkey’s and Jupiter Bowl offer high-alpine high adventure skiing up to 10,026’. Back in the 1960’s skiers would ride 3-mile mine shafts to access the snowy slopes, today you can coast on comfy high-speed six passenger and quad lifts to hit Park City’s signature runs. PCMR is our OUR FAVORITE!!!!

9. You need to ski Deer Valley ( http://www.deervalley.com/) before you die. Deer Valley is a posh, semi-private feeling ski paradise where the service is as sublime as the snow. Snowboarders are banned and lift ticket sales are limited (so buy your Deer Valley tix in advance during holidays and peak times).

10. Did I mention that they have THE GREATEST SNOW ON EARTH!!!!!

I know I'm a little biased, BUT once you experience it you will come back! As most locals will tell you, "We came here for the winter and skiing.....but stayed for the summer"

July 4th in Park City was..... AWESOME!!

I just wanted to post an update from our trip to Park City over July 4th holiday. It was amazing to see the mountains in the summer and refreshing to get away from the upper 90's/high humidity in Tennessee. We hiked trails, rode the rides at PCMR (http://www.parkcitymountain.com/summer), ate good food (never had a bad meal in PC!) and spent the 4th at the parade/city park festivities..... which was GREAT!
On top of all that we worked.....yes worked! We spent the majority of our time kicking off the remodel of our Sun Creek condo, meeting with the contractor and stimulating the local PC economy by buying all we could locally in PC......  http://www.visitparkcity.com/member-directory/pc/

Park City Events - Annual Special Events

We'll it's May 19th and PC is getting snow showers today and it's 33 degrees. The weather forecasters are saying they may get 30" in the next 2 days...really on May 19th..... what about Global Warming....lol????

PC is trying to get ready for there summer season of biking, hiking and rides at the resort and this snow isn't what they really want during "mud" season at the lower elevations. They are still skiing at Snowbird and projections at this rate show they may be open for skiing until July 4th. I have never really thought about it, but do I really want to go skiing when I'm out there the 1st week of July???

Here's a link to the annual events in the PC area:

IN SEARCH OF POWDER: A Story of America's Disappearing Ski Bum

Here's the link to the FB page for the book.... if you haven't read it yet your missing out on a good read!

Only 6 more days left in the PCMR ski season...closing day-April 17th... :(

We all know that ski season's must come to an end at some point, but with all the recent snow that Park City has received (27 inches in 3 days last week!) it's making it harder to accept for alot of folks. I've seen post on FB begging PCMR to stay open past April 17th, but they can't as they only have 1 month to get the resort ready for the summer season....yes PC and PCMR have a GREAT summer season (were going to experience it the first week of July ourselves) with summer events, concerts, hiking and lift served mountain biking trails.  I have some FB friends who reside in Park City and while they have enjoyed the recent snow they are ready for spring as there snow pack in the lower elevations has been melting and they have water/mud issues to deal with in some residential areas.

So, as PCMR closes out another GREAT ski season it's only 6 days till it's time to say goodbye to winter and hello to spring and summer!
I will continue posting spring and summer tips as the ski season never ends from an exercise and equipment standpoint. There are good deals to be had at ski shops ,and online stores, for clothing, equipment, demo skis, etc....... the list is endless so check out your retail and online stores for DEALS.

Closing thought....... just because the resorts are closing doesn't mean your ski/snowboard mind and body should shut down as well!

Cheers- Jeff

Park City Magazine- A GREAT way to explore PC online before you go!

Well today I have the PC withdrawals as the Park City forecast is calling for snow showers thru the weekend and I'm here in Tennessee with NO snow! Can't wait till our renter moves out July 1st( Brad don't take this the wrong way if you see this....lol) so we can enjoy our PC condo.

Anyway enough of my ranting....

What type of ski clothing will I need for a ski/snowboard trip?

We'll start by looking at what you will need to pack, or purchase at the resort city, to be comfortable on the slopes. Sun and Ski ( http://www.sunandski.com/) has a very good packing list that breaks it down by category, type of clothing, # days you will be skiing, benefits of the clothing and it has the option to look at the list broken down for men, women or kids. The link to that list is below in the post and hopefully it will help you at least get a baseline for what you need. Some may need more clothing, others may need less. Over the years we always packed too much and we now have what we need down to a science depending on the number of days were skiing....... you will to with time.

Where To Get Your Discount Ski Lift Tickets in Salt Lake City

A couple of companies in Salt Lake City have an agreement with all of Utah's Ski Resorts and they can be found at  Canyon Sports , http://www.skinsee.com/tickets.html  and   http://www.skitruck.com/product_listing.php?subcat=12 . You simply go there and buy them at the discounted price, that's it! Nothing else to buy, no pint of blood to leave. Sure they're hoping you will buy some of their other products and services while you are there, and many people do, but, its not necessary if you just want to buy cheap lift tickets.

Your savings for a ticket each day ranges from $6.00 up to $28.00  ....... this is a HUGE savings over a weeks time.

Hope you find this helpful. Comments are appreciated!

Jeff's Top 10 reasons to ski/board in Park City, Utah!!!

A little bit of info about me and what the purpose of this blog will be

My family and I have been going to Utah for the last 10 years to ski. We fell in love with the skiing in Utah and specifically Park City. Over the years I have thought it would be nice to have known more about the ski resorts before going to them for the first time and what is needed for your trip. This blog will be dedicated to provide that information to you based on my travels to the Park City Utah ski resorts over the last 10 years. I hope that this blog will provide you with the necessary information to make your family ski vacations memorable and less stressful.
